Rahul demands meaningful implementation of OROP

Steps should be taken to send a message to soldiers on Diwali expressing "our gratitude both in words and in deed", Mr. Gandhi wrote to Mr. Modi.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday questioned the Narendra Modi government’s resolve to work for soldiers’ welfare, asking the Prime Minister to first implement the ‘one rank, one pension’ scheme in a meaningful way and redress their pay anomalies and other grievances.
Mr. Gandhi wrote to Mr. Modi saying he was saddened at the decisions of the government taken in the last few weeks “which are far from reassuring the soldiers and has caused them pain instead”.
Steps should be taken to send a message to soldiers on Diwali expressing “our gratitude both in words and in deed”, Mr. Gandhi said in his letter to the Prime Minister who has launched a campaign through which people can send their Diwali greetings and messages to soldiers guarding the nation’s frontiers to boost their morale.
The Prime Minister will celebrate this Diwali with ITBP personnel at one of the remotest border posts in Uttarakhand.
“Just days after our soldiers conducted the surgical strikes, the disability pension system was converted to a new slab system, that in many instances drastically reduces the pension received by these brave men in case of a disability,” the Congress leader said.
“OROP must be implemented in a meaningful way to satisfy ex-servicemen and the anomalies in the 7th Pay Commission must be addressed at the earliest, because soldiers should not have to struggle to claim what is surely due to them on behalf of a grateful nation,” Mr. Gandhi said, claiming that some decision of the government have “adversely affect the morale of our armed forces”.
The Prime Minister had earlier accused the Congress of not taking the OROP issue seriously by earmarking a paltry sum of Rs. 500 crore for it.
Mr. Gandhi said, “As a responsible democracy we must make sure that the brave soldiers who put their lives on the line for each one of us, feel the love, support and gratitude of 125 crore people.”
“I therefore urge you, Prime Minister, to ensure that our soldiers get their due whether it is regarding compensation, disability pension, or parity with civil employees,” he said.
Mr. Gandhi said that the rollout of the 7th Pay Commission continues to keep the defence forces at a disadvantage and further exacerbates the disparity between them and civil employees.
“As we celebrate Diwali, and rejoice in the victory of light over darkness, let us send this message to our soldiers that our gratitude is expressed both in words and in deed. This is the very least we owe to those who give up their today to secure our tomorrow,” the letter further said.
Mr. Gandhi greeted the Prime Minister on Diwali and hoped the new year brings peace, prosperity and happiness for the people of the country.
He told the Prime Minister that the soldiers risked their lives each day to defend the nation and “it is our duty to show them that we care for them and their families, not only through our words, but also through our actions”.
Mr. Gandhi also accused the government of downgrading the status of military officers vis-a-vis their civilian counterparts through a letter of October 18, 2016.
He said the OROP implemented by government does not fully meet the genuine demands of ex-servicemen and they have been forced to come out on the streets to make their voice heard on this vital issue.

    3. In our Constitution, there are words like -"We people of India, Govt of the people, by the people and for the people, etc". Why can't be there in Ministry of Defence - First of all Ministry is renamed as Ministry of Defence(Military and Weapons & Equipment) and Ministry of Defence(Civilian and Def Production), manned by Military Officers and Civian Qualified Managers respectively. This is the only solution to avoid Military and Civilians confrontations. This is for betterment of Indian population and India as a strong uprising nation to compete China.Budget for Defence must be 3% of GDP to avoid any financial problems and on the mercy of Finance Minister.

    5. Where was he during 10 yrs of UPA rule. Why he did not raise this issue. His grandmother had rewarded Armed Forces for their 1971 victory by reducing the pension and increasing that of the bureaucrats. He should have rectified it when he got a chance. Now everyone will talk of OROP especially as state elections are around the corner. Never ever believe the politicians. they will always play into the hands of IAS babus. without whose support they cant survive.

      1. Let us be united and do not politicise the matter. Now some one wrote for the betterment of the soldier especially who had promised to fulfill the demand of OROP in their election manifesto and did not fulfill it completely. During the congress regime they bridging the gap two time, now present Govt did so and claimed that they have implemented OROP.

    6. Thanks Rahul for your positive comments and rrecommendations.Hope he pays some imp to your suggestions and implements those points which were snatched away from us after winning 1971war and creation of Bangladesh with 96K Pakistan POW.High Morale and motivation of AFs is imp to win war and to place /risk life befoe duty.We are apolitical and assure all the countrymen that we will not be found wanting in doing our duty. For us country is first and foremost.Do help us in reining our internal enemy the Bureaucrats (Babus)who are ever ready to damage our ego in status, pay and parity.MOD shld be manned by Defences personnel and not Civilian who lacks basic knowledge

      1. Manning defence ministry by forces is a very good suggestion for the secrecy of forces and decision on forces will be by forces. How a civilian know difficulties and tragedies of forces being faced.

    8. Nice to read the comments of Rahul Gandhi. But one thing is not clear that UPA was in power for last 10 years, what prevented him from implementing OROP in true spirit then, rather than playing politics now. Long live Hindustan the land of dirty politics.

    9. Kindly raise these point like it is not OROP it's ORFP. Definition of OROP is changed. Disability slab is changed. Civil v/s defence parity changed.

    10. This is what Rahul can do while in opposition. When in power his grand mother awarded reduction in pension from 70% to 50% to the soldiers after 1971 war. This is dirty politics. What cong did for during 60 yrs in power in centre.

    13. Politics is inherent activity in Republic of India or any other democracy .politics cannot be isolated from events of realities.
OROP is an evolving issue from 1973.
There have been one time increments (OTI),since then.
On critical analysis ,the OROP ( truncated)of 2015 is another such OTI.
Things are moving towards real/full OROP.
GOVTs / party in power have done something or other ,despite so much of resistence by bureaucracy.
The truth and fact is -despite publicly stated ,public stand on OROP by all netas ,the issue did not materialise due to resistence by bureaucracy and passivity /inaction by military.
Now let us appreciate actions of netas inclusive of Modi,Rahul Gandhi,Kejriwal.....etc at different points of time.
Let jealousies of some low level netas not lead to adverse comments on the actions of other party netas.
