True, that hopes soared very high when PM designated Madam Nirmala sitaraman as Defense Minister of India. Effervescent euphoria was all prevalent amongst serving as well as retired defense fraternity.I thought that the trend of status down-gradation of soldier (officers as well as personnel below) which started in 1973 would come to an end. The reality is contrary to expectation. The process of status decimation of defense launched by a lady Defense Minister forty five years ago has now been given a new low by another lady Defense Minister. Both the ladies Madams Indira Gandhi and Nirmala Sitaraman are respected for their efficiency and no nonsense approach to issues before them. Notwithstanding the resounding victories of 1965 and 1971 Indira ji chose to denigrate and relegate status of defense service personnel. Till now the process under different dispensations remained unchanged. But Nirmala ji takes the cake. With her order directing the defense personnel to clean up trash littered by visitors in areas of tourist importance, to say the least, is preposterous. Self esteem and honor are the two vital emotions boosting morale of a soldier. When he is deprived of these two fiery ingredients a soldier becomes a caricature and thereby danger to the safety and security of the country. The order, in effect, equates a soldier to a sweeper. A soldier is a strange and unusual creature. He does everything voluntarily be it natural disaster or social service but an order is different. If a suggestion was made that defense participation in "Swatch Bharath" program is desirable and what was the opinion of the defense forces, the answer would have been a all out approval. Instead the DM ordered that men in uniform to clean up the litter thrown by tourist which has not gone well with either serving or retired defense personnel. I am sure that Nirmala ji, on her own, would not have ventured into this act of ultimate insult unless advised by bureaucrats in MOD. The damage is done. There is widespread resentment among rank and file of armed forces and veterans. The DM is on visit to operational areas and it would serve well to gather the views forces on the order. A demoralized military is real threat to security. Respected DM Please do not transform Sappers to Sweepers. Ex JWO Sukumaran
